Broxted sits at the heart of the ‘Hundred Parishes’. One of England’s best kept secrets, this unique area of unspoilt countryside contains over 6,000 listed buildings. There’s always more to explore among the winding lanes, quiet fields and picture perfect villages.
Despite its small size, the hamlet of Broxted contains a total of 46 listed buildings, including several of houses within St Mary’s Mews itself.
Overlooking the Mews, St Mary’s Church dates back to the 13th century. Alongside its 17th century bells and weatherboarded belfry, the church is famous for a pair of stained glass windows which commemorate the release from captivity of journalist John McCarthy.
McCarthy was kidnapped in Lebanon in 1986 and, alongside fellow hostage Brian Keenan, held for five years. Whitehall in St Mary’s Mews was at that time home to the McCarthy family and the church became a place of prayer for his release. McCarthy’s mother, who sadly died while he was still in captivity, is buried in the churchyard.
